Is WordPress still the best way to build websites, or are we holding onto workflows that are becoming unnecessarily complicated?
With AI changing how websites are designed and built, a new generation of visual, static-first tools is starting to challenge the way we’ve worked for years. But are they genuinely better alternatives, or just another set of tools to learn?
In this video I take a look at the changes happening in the web design industry and what they mean if you’re coming from a WordPress background.
I discuss whether it still makes sense to stick 100% with WordPress, take a hybrid approach, or move parts of your workflow towards static sites — especially as AI tools can struggle with the extra layers of abstraction introduced by page builders and complex setups.
I walk through several Astro-focused, visual or hybrid tools that can help you build and manage faster, static-first sites with less ongoing maintenance, including:
Sitereal (offline desktop app with strong visual editing, CMS collections and AI integration), Instatic (free, built by the Core Framework developers with AI options and familiar workflows), Stacki (Webflow-familiar approach with local and collaborative options), and Phantom Studio (hosted tool that began as Phantom WP, now broader than WordPress with static output and evolving visual editing).
I also share why these tools may be worth your time if you’re trying to reduce WordPress maintenance for sites that don’t need constant updates, and I invite you to comment with where you are in your own journey.
